It was dreadful for Jim and Birdie that Manny (Detective-Sergeant Emmanuel) Gribbon thought that they were lying when they said that they had seen, actually seen, the bullion robbery. Because they could so easily have convinced him of the truth, only - only, big brother Mike's life would be in the gravest possible danger if they did !

Still, there was nothing to prevent Jim and Birdie from playing a lone, unofficial hand; nothing except their own danger . . .
